Frequently Asked Questions

What is ATEX certification and when do I need it?

ATEX is the European directive (2014/34/EU) covering equipment for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (zones classified due to presence of flammable gases, dusts or vapours). Any electrical equipment installed in Zone 0, Zone 1 or Zone 2 (gas) or Zone 20, 21, 22 (dust) must be ATEX certified for the applicable zone and gas group. Instrumentation transmitters and enclosures in oil & gas plants are typically in Zone 1 or Zone 2.

What is the difference between ATEX and IECEx?

ATEX is the EU directive; IECEx is the international certification scheme under IEC standards. In practice, the technical requirements are very similar. ATEX is required for equipment sold in the EU/UK; IECEx is required or accepted in many non-EU countries (Middle East, Australia, Africa). Most Technor and APLISENS products carry both certifications.
